Blog Review: Engadget
If I’m going to criticise the media, I have to review all forms. Blogs, especially insanely popular ones, bring us information much as the media does. In fact, often, they are better sources than companies or the mainstream media. Engadget falls into this category.
The site is entirely based on technology reviews; from novelty items to iPhone analyses, the writers make technology their business. They’re good at it, too.
The advantages of such a blog are numerous. They can have multiple writers with multiple areas of expertise write about what they know. They have many, many sources of information, which expands their ability to review. Most importantly, as they don’t work for any specific technology company, their analyses are (at least from my observation) honest. They’re not trying to sell anybody anything; they’re simply putting end-user reviews out there.
Of course, the downside is that incredibly technical people often speak a language that’s difficult for Average Joe (you know, like me) to understand. They can give you the best information they have about something, and often it’s still garbled techno-speak. Moreover, because they’re trying to be “hip” and “cool”, they often deliberately misuse the language. Maybe it’s just because I’m an English major, but I think educated people who write for the masses shouldn’t mangle the language. It’s not cool to be ignorant, and people that stupid shouldn’t be writing. They should be asking me: “Would you like fries with that, sir?”
