It Is Not Either/Or
Politicians are pretty clever. If you listen to the way the current immigration debate is reported in the media you would believe that there are only two alternative: round up and deport 14-20 million illegals or grant them all immediate amnesty. The press doesn’t seem to question these assumptions and you hear them repeated every day.
This debate is coming at the problem from the wrong end. If I were being asked what to do with all the illegals here my answer would be absolutely nothing. That’s not where you begin addressing the problem. It might be where you end up, but it’s not where you begin. First, for national security reasons, you secure the borders and the ports. When that is done, you simultaneously begin fixing the broken legal immigration system, and cracking down on the employers who hire illegals with stiff fines and stiffer jail sentences. It will take maybe 3-4 well publicized cases before people will be too afraid to hire an illegal. It won’t be worth it.
Then get the legal ID system in place and begin handing them out to those who are now getting here legally much faster thanks to the new system. Require that the new ID card be presented for schools and all social services. Then just wait. After a couple of years when wages reach an equilibrium, assess the situation and determine if we really need more workers. If we do, then by all means design and implement a program to bring them in.
So what about all the illegals, I can hear you asking. Nothing. By this time they will have already begun self-deporting for lack of jobs. It’s a common mistake to assume these people come here because they want to be Americans. They come here because they want jobs. Most have no intention of ever assimilating. Dry up their jobs and they will go home. Once that’s done, then it’s going to be a simple job to round up and deport the remnants as you find them.
